ATLANTA - Cam Newton passed for a career-high 335 yards and four touchdowns, plus ran for a pair of TDs in an MVP performance that led Auburn to the Southeastern Conference championship with a 56-17 rout of South Carolina on Saturday.

Billy Gardner, Jr. will return in 2010 for his fourth season as the Montgomery Biscuits’ manager, according to the Tampa Bay Rays announcement of minor league coaching staffs recently. With this announcement Gardner passes manager Charlie Montoyo (2004-2006) as the most tenured manager in Biscuits history.

Eleven of the Southeastern Conference football squads are represented on the 10th annual SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team, it was announced Thursday.

 Mississippi State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt led the way with four selections each. SEC Champion Alabama had three selections on the team.

TROY - Troy University senior quarterback Levi Brown was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the week this week for a record sixth time this year.

Southern Academy scored a touchdown on the last play of the first half and the last play of the game, but neither played a role in the Cougars loss to Edgewood Academy 28-13 Friday Night at Stoors Field.

G.W. Carver proved on Friday that a team doesn’t have to dominate time of possession in order to win.

The Wolverines also proved that you could score almost every way imaginable in their 34-7 victory over John Carroll of Birmingham in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at Cramton Bowl.

The Robert E. Lee Generals proved it could enjoy the lead and hold onto it in a 14-8 win over Jeff Davis. The win moved them closer to a playoff bid, which becomes official with a victory over either Sidney Lanier or Stanhope Elmore in the next two weeks.
