TUSCALOOSA – All the history-making accolades didn’t mean much to the Wetumpka seniors on Friday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

They watched a three-point lead at halftime dissipate in a momentum-shifting second half and stood silently on the field at the conclusion of a 31-10 loss, suffering through a postgame ceremony at midfield as Pinson Valley walked away with the championship trophy.

WETUMPKA – It’s third and one. Everyone in the stands knows what is coming.

“The kids love it,” Wetumpka coach Tim Perry said. “When it’s third and short, they’re all over there on the sideline, calling for it.”

It’s the Smoke Cat, or the Indians’ version of the Wildcat formation with Kevosiey Smoke running the ball. Other players have run it this season, particularly senior receiver Robert Laprade, but it’s not the same.

WETUMPKA – It isn’t your normal week at Wetumpka High, but it’s something a group of seniors promised each other six years ago.

That’s when several football players looked into the future and predicted they would be playing for a state championship one day as high school seniors.

WETUMPKA – It was the biggest call of the game. And it wasn’t made by a coach.

Backed up in the shadows of its own goal line, Wetumpka was forced to punt with just over five minutes remaining, guaranteeing Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa good field position as the Patriots hoped to turn up the pressure with a touchdown to cut into a 10-point lead.

Kavosiey Smoke had other ideas. As teammate Jadarious Martin prepared to take the snap near his goal line, Smoke turned toward his teammate as he barked out the signal to snap the ball to his punter. Martin took the snap and bolted for the right side of the field. Eighty-two yards later, he was in the end zone and the Indians had secured their first-ever trip to the state championship game with a 44-27 victory.

Every two years, Alabama High School Athletic Association programs have to contend with new rivalries as they move up or down in the classification system.

The biggest change for the 2018-2020 classification period involves St. James, who drops from their customary position as a Class 4A program to become the largest school in Class 3A.

The last and only time the Wetumpka Indians were in the AHSAA semifinals, John Maddaloni was roaming the sidelines as the head coach. The likes of Jamie Winborn, Reid Tankersley and Tim Castro were suiting up.

Bill Clinton was president. The Internet was alive and well but not necessarily on your cell phone.

And current coach Tim Perry was at Alabama Christian Academy.
