The Southern League playoffs will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a 10th consecutive season.

The Montgomery Biscuits continued their season-long stretch of winning close contests, following up on Saturday’s 1-0 win over Columbus with a 2-0 victory over the Clingstones on Sunday.

Coupled with Biloxi’s 4-1 win over Pensacola, the Biscuits are seven games ahead of the second-place Blue Wahoos with six games to play.

“It’s a credit to them,” Montgomery manager Kevin Boles said of his players. “I wish it didn’t take as long as it did. We were hoping that by Aug. 1 this thing could start turning around and it started about two days before Aug. 1.”

Heading into the last week of July, the Biscuits spent six games in last place in the Southern League South Division race. Armed with a hot August and an even hotter September, the Biscuits have been in first place the last two weeks by winning 13 of their last 14 games.

It’s been quite a remarkable run for a team that has struggled to swing the bat for most of the year, winning 44 of their 76 games this season by one or two runs.

“We’re not a team that scores a lot of runs,” Boles noted last week, “but we’ve found ways to manufacture them, whether it’s hit and runs or bunts. We’re doing different things from an offensive standpoint.”

Sunday’s win was the 20th in the second half of the season by one or two runs. The Biscuits won in typical fashion as Brock Jones broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a two-run home run and three Biscuits pitchers did the rest, combining for the staff’s 11th shutout of the season.

“The dugout’s a different atmosphere,” Boles said. “We have guys that had a real tough start to the season and they’ve never handled that before. They’ve never been through it. Now, they understand that when they go 0-for-4, it shouldn’t carry over to the next three games.

The Biscuits (76-56) will host Knoxville beginning Tuesday at Riverwalk, just four wins away from posting their third consecutive 80-win season. The Biscuits will play in the Southern League Division Series the following week, earning a Southern League-record 10th consecutive playoff berth. Eight of those came with second-half division championships.

The best-of-three Southern League South Division Series pits Biloxi and Montgomery in Riverwalk Stadium on Sept. 16 with the second game at Biloxi on Sept. 18. A third game, if necessary, will be played at Biloxi on Sept. 19.

The SL North Division series will feature Chattanooga and defending Southern League champion Birmingham.

The best-of-three Southern League Championship Series will be played at the Chattanooga-Birmingham winner on Sept. 21 and the Biloxi-Montgomery winner on Sept. 23. A third game, if necessary, will be played at either Biloxi or Montgomery on Sept. 24.
