The second half of the Southern League season opened on Tuesday with the Montgomery Biscuits on a streak.
But not necessarily a winning streak.
The Biscuits came up short in their quest to win the first half of the South Division race, falling four games behind Biloxi at the end.
But the history of the franchise says the second half is all theirs.
Montgomery is after a ninth-straight playoff berth, something that no team in league history has accomplished.
Most of those berths came via a second-half surge.
“It’s a second half club,” manager Kevin Boles said. “What they were accomplish as a club…. with the players that we received in Bowling Green, they fit. We have a pretty good understanding of what to expect. History for this franchise has proven it.”
The Biscuits finished the first half with a respectable 39-31 record and as one of only four teams in the league above .500. but the success came typically against the teams below them. They had a 13-17 record against teams with winning records.
They won just 6-of-18 meetings against first-place Biloxi, which finished the first-half with the best overall record. That includes losing five of the final six games against the Shuckers earlier this month.
The Biscuits have nine more meetings against Biloxi with the next three coming July 18-20.
A good start to the second half could come against the Trash Pandas, which finished behind the Biscuits in the standings. They follow with a short three-game set with Columbus (ATL), which brought up the rear in the first half.
The second half of the season got off to a good start Tuesday with an impressive 13-5 victory over the Trash Pandas at Riverwalk Stadium. Xavier Isaac and Colton Ledbetter each homered in the win.
The series continues tonight with first pitch set at 6:35 p.m. on what is Military Night. For tickets, visit biscuitsbaseball.com.
