Jamall Canty is one of the best-kept secrets in the state of Alabama, his coach insists.
He might not be a secret much longer.
Canty scored 30 points on Wednesday, leading the Pike Road Patriots to the championship of the Coach Larry Chapman Foundation Tip-Off Classic with an 85-63 rout of Brew Tech at Montgomery Academy.
There were plenty of talented athletes on a Pike Road team that improved to 5-1 with the win, but Canty stood as a consistent scorer and defender against the Rams.
“That kid is amazing,” Pike Road coach Marcus Mickles said. “He’s a really quiet kid, comes to work every day and works extremely hard. He’s one of the top players in the state that nobody knows about. He’s doing a good job every night showing up. Everybody needs to take notice.”
Brew Tech (6-3) certainly did as Canty. Kody Perry-Calhoun and Braylon Barker helped the Patriots pull away from a competitive first quarter with 34 second-quarter points that extended the lead to 50-30 at the half, a margin the Patriots would maintain for the remainder of the game.
“I enjoy coming to this tournament,” Mickles said. “Coach Chapman is a great guy and the tournament is run really, really well. As far as us, with this being my second year, it’s light years from last year. We were on the fly a lot and trying to get to know the guys because I got there in August.
“Now we’re more stable. We’ve got a really good team and have a lot of guys who contribute to the cause. They’re buying into the team part of it.”
Barker had 17 points and Perry-Calhoun added 11 for Pike Road (5-1), which returns home to play host to Montgomery Academy on Monday.
Dwellyn Jackson led Brew Tech with 12 points, followed by Kam Honer and Landyn McGuire with 11 points each, Braylon Thompson with nine and Myles Bryant with eight.
Joining Canty on the all-tournament team were teammates Mosa Ali, Perry-Calhoun and Barker, Brew Tech’s Honer, Jackson and Thompson, Lee-Scott’s William Liles and Haiden Harper and Montgomery Academy’s Mason Ellis and Will Renfroe. Montgomery Academy’s Rob Ashworth received the Coach Larry Chapman Foundation Character Award.

The Warriors rallied from a 16-point deficit, taking control in the final minutes to defeat Montgomery Academy 44-41 in the consolation game of the Coach Larry Chapman Foundation Tip-Off Classic on Wednesday at Montgomery Academy.
The Eagles led 18-2 in the first quarter, holding the Warriors without a field goal, but Lee-Scott outscored Montgomery Academy 18-8 in the second quarter to climb back into the game.
Braden Gordon, playing in his first game this season, led the Eagles with 14 points and six rebounds. Robert McGaughey added seven points and seven rebounds while JayJay Jackson added seven points and had two assists and three steals.
Haiden Harper led Lee-Scott with 13 points, followed by Grayson Haley with 12.
Montgomery Academy (1-2) travels to Pike Road on Monday.
