FLAG FOOTBALL: Teams pick up win in inaugural Prattville Tourney

Catholic 46, Billingsley 8

BILLINGSLEY -- Hayden Fitts threw for a pair of touchdowns and caught a pass for another as the defending 1A-5A state champs cruised to an easy win over the 1A Bears’ first-year program on Tuesday.

Fitts completed 6 of 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a 65-yard pass from Avery Sadler for a touchdown. Sadler was 5 of 7 for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Haley Ishman had two receptions for 80 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown catch, while Ellis O’Connor led the receiving corps with 30 yards on three receptions. Frances Rogers added a 20-yard reception for a touchdown and Kamryn Iverson had a 19-yard catch for a touchdown.

Zariyah Thomas had four tackles, including a sack, and Fitts had three tackles. Fitts, Ishman, Addi Little, Abby Talbot and Maggie McNeely all had interceptions for the Knights.

Camia Sheppard scored the Bears’ touchdown on a 34-yard pass and also added the two-point conversion.

Catholic (1-2) returns home to play host to Prattville on Wednesday. Billingsley (1-3) plays host to Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

 

G. W. Carver 14, Billingsley 0

PRATTVILLE -- The Wolverines scored a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth to put away the Bears in a battle of first-year programs at the Prattville Flag Football Tournament at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Saturday.

The faster, quicker Wolverines held the Billingsley offense in check both on the ground and in the air. Bears quarterback Mia Shuffert was 3 of 11 for 17 yards. Ja’Kayla Harris had four receptions for 8 yards and Kaliyah McCary had one catch for 9 yards.

Harris had three tackles and an interception and Harmony Arnold had three tackles and an interception. Alana Jones had an interception and Camia Sheppard had a pair of tackles for the Bears.

Billingsley (1-2) returns home to play host to Catholic on Tuesday.  

 

Billingsley 22, Julian 0

PRATTVILLE -- Billingsley picked up the school’s first-ever win in flag football, defeating Percy Julian 22-0 in the Prattville Flag Football Tournament at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Saturday.

The Bears led 15-0 at the end of the first quarter and added another touchdown in the third.

Kinsley Cottom completed 7 of 10 passes for 36 yards. Harmony Arnold led the Bears’ rushing attack with 20 yards on three carries, followed by Mia Shuffert with 18 yards on two carries.

Alana Jones had three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Ja’Kayla Harris also had an interception return for a touchdown and Mia Shuffert added a touchdown.

Billingsley (1-1) returned to action in the tournament against G.W. Carver.

 

Helena 18, Billingsley 6

PRATTVILLE -- Helena defeated the Bears 18-6 in the opening round of the Prattville Flag Football Tournament at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Saturday, handing the first-year program its first varsity loss.

Billingsley opened the season with a pair of junior varsity games against Marbury and Prattville, but Saturday’s game against Helena represented the first varsity game.

Kinsley Cotton completed 6 of 13 passes for 52 yards for Billingsley, alternating with Mia Shuffert, who completed 4 of 12 passes for 26 yards with an interception.

Alana Jones had four receptions for 31 yards, while Ja’Kayla Harris had two catches for 11 yards and Harmony Arnold had two for 21 yards. Camia Sheppard had three tackles and an interception to lead the Billingsley defense. Arnold, Jones and Tatianna Owens had two tackles each.

Sheppard scored the Bears’ lone touchdown. Billingsley (0-1) returns to action in the tournament against Percy Julian.
