FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP: Catholic's historic win streak comes to an end; Carr gets first win at Prattville

St. Clair County 42, Catholic 28

ODENVILLE -- St. Clair County rallied from a seven-point deficit late in the third quarter with three consecutive touchdowns to upset two-time defending state champion Catholic 42-28 on Friday night.

The game was tied at the half before the Knights grabbed the lead, only to have the Fighting Saints rally with three unanswered touchdowns.

The Fighting Saints (2-0) snapped the state’s longest winning streak at 30 games. It also marked the first time Catholic has lost in 45 regular-season games, dating back to a 2020 loss to Montgomery Academy.

Catholic (1-1) returns home next week to put its 40-game unbeaten streak in region games to the test, hosting Eufaula on Friday night.

Prattville: 43, Stanhope Elmore 13

PRATTVILLE -- JJ Williams threw for a touchdown and Tristin Blackmon ran for two more as the Lions opened the renovated Stanley-Jensen Stadium with a 43-13 rout of Stanhope Elmore on Friday night.

Williams completed 11 of 17 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown, while his backup, Will McKay, completed 4 of 7 passes for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

DeShawn Hall had three receptions for 101 yards , including a 48-yard touchdown catch. Brayden Graham also had three catches for 93 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown reception. Donovan Brown added a 28-yard touchdown reception.

Blackmon rushed for 59 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 carries. Williams added 38 yards on four carries.

Defensively, Eric Townsend  had three tackles, including one for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, Datavius Caldwell had four solo tackles and one assist, along with one tackle for loss, and Elijah Brown had three tackles, including a 7-yard sack and a tackle for loss.

The Lions (1-1) remain home next week for an important region matchup with Oak Mountain at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Friday. Stanhope Elmore (1-1) returns home to open its new stadium on Thursday against Julian in the region opener.

G.W. Carver 39, P. Julian 6

Quarterback Zion Crumpton thew six touchdown passes and the Carver defense held Julian to 76 yards in total offense to earn its first win of the season on Friday at Cramton Bowl.

It was first-year coach Mario White’s first victory.

Crumpton threw TD passes to four different receivers including two each to Elijah Peak and Ja’Corey Smith as well as one pass for a score to Natorian Green and Jamares Harris. Five of the passes came in the first half when Carver built a 26-point lead.

Julian’s lone score came on a Ernest Shuford pass to Jeremiah Crawford for 11 yards in the second quarter.

Crumpton finished with 107 yards passing on 8-of-13 attempts. He added 88 yards rushing.

Carver (1-1) opens Class 7A Region 2 play next week against JAG while Julian (1-1) travels to Stanhope Elmore next Thursday for Class 6A Region 2 action.

Enterprise 24, Pike Road 17

PIKE ROAD - Class 7A Enterprise needed a late touchdown to come from behind to defeat Pike Road in its home opener on Friday.

The Patriots scored on the second play from scrimmage with a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gunner Gibbs to wide receiver Omari Smith. After an Enterprise field goal, they added a second touchdown on a 55-yard drive capped by Jordan Holmes’ 2-yard plunge to extend their lead to 14-3 by the end of the first quarter.

Pike Road added a Conner Hall 26-yard field goal to make it 17-3.

Enterprise tied the game at 17-17 in the third quarter and Mason Burkhardt scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth.

Gibbs finished 9-of-20 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown. JaMichael Jones had 81 yards on 17 carries. Smith had three catches for 83 yards and a score.

Pike Road (1-1) opens Class 6A Region 2 play on Friday against Rehobeth.

 

Lowndes Academy 41, Crenshaw Christian 14

HAYNEVILLE -- Jeremy Hardy rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries to help the Rebels win their 24th consecutive regular-season game with a 41-14 rout of Crenshaw Christian at Mac Champion Stadium on Friday night.

Bradyn Stokes threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Rebels added another touchdown on a punt return to build a 41-0 lead before the Cougars finally answered in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Jacob Rogers.

Stokes threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the first quarter and the Rebels added another score on a punt return before Hardy scored the first of three touchdowns on a 33-yard run for a 20-0 lead at the half.

Hardy added a 29-yard scoring run before Stokes connected with Huston Hampton on a 34-yard touchdown pass for a 34-0 lead. Hardy followed with a 46-yard scoring run and Bradford Tidwell added the fifth extra point of the night for a 41-0 lead.

Stokes completed 12 of 20 passes for 141 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

Lowndes (2-0) remains home next Friday to face Fort Dale in the Class AAA Region 2 opener. Crenshaw (0-2) travels to Abbeville Christian next Friday for the Cougars’ AA Region 1 opener.

 

McKenzie 48, Prattville Christian 25

PRATTVILLE -- Quay Jackson ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead McKenzie past Prattville Christian 48-25 at Panther Stadium on Friday night.

McKenzie took an early lead it would never relinquish, using the arm and legs of Jackson to stay in front. Jackson ran 28 yards for a touchdown and threw a 21-yard pass for another as McKenzie built a 28-6 lead. After Cody Chapman cut into the lead with a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Jackson went back to work with a 36-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 66-yard scoring run to open up a 40-12 lead.

Jackson completed 9 of 11 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 127 yards and two more touchdowns.

His performance offset that of Nolan Stuart, who completed 14 of 27 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns, hitting Justin Chapman with a 30-yard strike to cut the deficit to 8-6 and then throwing touchdown passes of 22 and 18 yards to Cody Chapman late for the Panthers’ final two touchdowns.

Cody Chapman had five receptions for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns in addition to his kickoff return. Justin Chapman had four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Prattville Christian (0-2) goes on the road next week for the region opener, traveling to Ragsdale-Boykin Field to play Trinity. McKenzie (1-0) returns home to play host to Elba in the region opener next Friday.

Holtville 35, Shelby County 13

HOLTVILLE - Jacob Burgess passed for 262 yards and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ first win of the season.

Bryant Boone had four catches for scores and Dylan Farris added another for the Bulldogs. Daishaun Zeigler added a touchdown run as part of his 83 yards rushing. Holtville totaled 462 yards in offense.

Tyler Hackett and Brock Godwin led the defense with nine tackles each. Boone also had a fumble recovery.

Holtville (1-1) opens Class 5A, Region 4 play next week at Sylacauga.

 

Tallassee 25, Elmore County 9

TALLASSEE -- Jaiden Gordon rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries to help the Tigers to their first win in 2025 at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium on Friday night.

Gordon scored the game’s first touchdown and put the game out of reach with his third score of the game in the fourth quarter.

Gordon ran 30 yards to make it 7-0 before the Panthers tied the game at 7-7 on a 24-yard pass from Gage Davis to Kason Moe and Tate McNeely’s extra point.

Tallassee would break into the lead in the second quarter on the first of three safeties scored in the game. After the safety, the Tigers drove down the field for a touchdown and a 16-7 lead on Gordon’s 10-yard run, then made it 18-7 on another safety late in the first half.

Elmore County recorded the third safety in the game, trimming the deficit to 18-9, before Gordon put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter on a 78-yard run.

Eli Thames led the Panther rushing attack with 147 yards on 29 carries. Davis completed 11 of 21 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, including five passes to Beau Taylor for 29 yards.

Tallassee quarterback John Carter completed 12 of 22 passes for 52 yards, with Cortland Roberts pulling in three of those receptions for 30 yards.

Tallassee (1-1) remains home next week to play Munford in the region opener, while Elmore County (1-1) travels to Ozark to play Carroll.
