FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP: Montgomery Academy tops ACA; Stanhope wins battle with rival Wetumpka

Montgomery Academy 50, Alabama Christian 21

Quarterback Reid McBride passed for 206 yards and three touchdowns to lead MA to the win over rival ACA on Friday at McLemore Field, closing out the regular season.

Braden Gordon rushed for 97 yardsand three touchdowns and added three receptions for 43 yards and a score.Jarrett Friendly had receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Ali Nelson 135 yards and a score on 15 carries plus a reception for 23 yards good for a touchdown.

MA (9-1, 7-0), champions of Class 3A, Region 2, will open the playoffs in two weeks against Flomaton.

ACA (4-5, 3-4) closes out its season next Friday against Maplesville.

Stanhope Elmore 35, Wetumpka 28

WETUMPKA - The Mustangs ended a four-game losing streak to their arch rivals while securing a third seed in the Class 6A playoffs Friday at Wetumpka Municipal Stadium.

Dee Barnes’ third touchdown of the night proved to be the difference in a see-saw game.

In the first quarter, Barnes opened the scoring with a 6-yard scamper but Wetumpka would score the next two touchdowns with Charlie Skipper hitting John Hudson Wingard on a 7-yard strike to tie the game followed by a Deon Floyd 8-yard run to give Wetumpka its first lead. Floyd’s score was set up by Jordan Smoke’s fumble return to inside the Mustangs’ 5 yard line.

The Mustangs tied the game on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter on Joidaden Carter-Stone’s 65-yard interception return. Later, they took the lead on a Davis Foshee pass before Wetumpka tied the game at 21-21 on Skipper’s touchdown pass to Kaleb Ballard.

The Indians retook the lead on Skipper’s third TD pass of the night to Hudson Wingard from 19 yards out to give them a 28-21 lead.

But the Mustangs would score twice in the fourth quarter, first on a Barnes 14 yard run. After Zach Gordon’s interception, the Mustangs punched in the game-deciding touchdown with Barnes reaching the end zone from 6 yards out.

The Mustangs (6-3, 4-2 6A, Region 2) will close out the regular season next Friday at 17 Springs against Calera. Wetumpka (5-4, 3-3) will be at home to face Demopolis.

St. James 24, Munford 12

St. James closed out the 2025 season with a 17-point explosion in the second quarter to defeat Munford 24-12 at Carlisle Field on Friday night.

Munford got on the scoreboard first when Brayden Nichols threw a 9-yard pass to Javier Curry for a 6-0 lead.

An Andrew Shalayda interception in the end zone turned back Munford’s next scoring threat and ignited the Trojans, who drove 93 yards in 12 plays to take the lead for good on Andrew Yancy’s 39-yard run and Dylan Hines’ extra point.

Miles Zukowski added a 35-yard run for a 14-6 lead and the Trojans benefitted from a penalty on the final play of the first half for more points.

A 21-yard run by Ford Bass on the final play of the second quarter picked up 15 more yards on a facemack penalty, resulting in an untimed down from the Munford 25-yard line. Hines booted a field goal for a 17-6 halftime lead.

Nichols scored on a 1-yard run to pull Munford within 17-12 before Bass scored on a 7-yard run to restore the two-score margin.
St. James closes out the regular season at 3-7.

Tallassee 35, Talladega 0

TALLADEGA -- Trent Morris completed 14 of 17 passes for 194 yards, throwing two touchdown passes to Jaiden Gordon and another to Cortland Roberts as the Tigers shut out Talladega 35-0 on Friday night.

Roberts, who had five receptions for 50 yards, caught the first touchdown pass on a 12-yard reception from Morris in the first quarter. Tiny Green added a 3-yard touchdown run and Gordon caught a 32-yard pass from Morris for a 19-0 lead in the first quarter.

Gordon, who had six receptions for 109 yards, added another touchdown on a 16-yard reception from Morris and Jeremiah Reeves added a 12-yard scoring run for a 33-0 halftime lead.

Tallassee (5-4) travels to Holtville next Friday to close out the regular season, then travels to Tuscaloosa to play American Christian in the first round of the 4A state playoffs on Nov. 7.

 

Billingsley 40, Keith 8

BILLINGSLEY -- Kyle Boice threw for three touchdowns and rushed for 125 yards to lead the Bears to a 40-8 win over Keith at Mims Field on Friday.

Boice completed 5 of 11 passes for 66 yards, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Jaylen Cutler and another to Kaden Cotton. He also rushed 11 times for 125 yards.

Cotton  had 17 carries for 187 yards and three touchdowns and his only reception went 28 yards for a touchdown.

Cutler had three receptions for 35 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran twice for 26 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Caleb Massey had 14 tackles, including two for loss, and fellow linebacker Trey Boyd had 10 tackles. Defensive end Gabe Cardenas had nine tackles and Boice added six tackles and an interception from his strong safety poisition.

Billingsley (5-4) will travel to McKenzie to close out the regular season next Thursday, then travel to either Linden or University Charter School for a first-round playoff game in two weeks.

 

Slocomb 47, Prattville Christian 27

SLOCOMB -- Hayes Hatton rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries as the Red Tops defeated Prattville Christian 47-27 on Friday night.

The Panthers couldn’t keep up with the unexpected offensive onslaught from Slocomb, who scored first on a 48-yard run by Hatton, then answered a PCA score with a kickoff return for a touchdown, then two more scores to build a 27-8 lead.

PCA had briefly grabbed an 8-7 lead on a 19-yard pass from Nolan Stuart to Cody Chapman, followed by a Justin Chapman conversion run.

Stuart completed 12 of 24 passes for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns, connecting with Cody Chapman for a 15-yard touchdown pass later in the game. Cody Chapman had five receptions for 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Justin Chapman had two catches for 60 yards.

Blake Bowman rushed for 149 yards on 14 carries and led the Panthers defensively with six tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss.

Slocomb (3-6) closes out the 2025 season with a game next week at Geneva County, while Prattville Christian closes out the season at 1-9.

 

Marbury 21, Holtville 14

HOLTVILLE -- Marbury handed Holtville its sixth consecutive loss but it wasn’t enough to help Marbury get into the playoffs as Beauregard’s upset of Valley eliminated the Bulldogs from playoff consideration.

Dashaun Zeigler rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown for Holtville, while Bryant Boone had 74 yards and a touchdown reception from Jacob Burgess.

Tyler Hackett led Holtville with eight tackles.

Holtville (2-7) will remain home and play host to Tallassee next Thursday, while Marbury (2-7) will return home and play host to Elberta to close out the 2025 season.

 

Crenshaw Christian 30, Hooper Academy 20

LUVERNE -- Hunter Bowman completed 14 of 18 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown, pulling the Colts within 22-20 late before Crenshaw scored in the final minute for a 30-20 victory.

Jeremy Griggs had 115 yards receiving, including the touchdown catch from Bowman.

Ayden Newman led the Hooper ground game with 15 carries for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively, Jaylen Lamons and Grayson White had six tackles each to lead the Colts, while Peyton Stallings and Griggs each recorded an interception.

Hooper (2-7) closes out the 2025 season at home next Thursday against Lowndes Academy. Crenshaw (3-7) will remain home next week and play host to Wilcox, then host the first round of the AA playoffs against South Choctaw on Nov. 7.

 

Elmore County 42, Sylacauga 14

ECLECTIC -- Gage Davis ran for a touchdown and threw three second-half touchdown passes as the Panthers scored 28 unanswered points to defeat Sylacauga 42-14 at Burt-Haynie Field on Friday.

Davis completed 14 of 18 passes for 184 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score to help the Panthers secure the third seed in region play.

Elmore County (6-3) will travel to Clanton to play Chilton County next Friday to close out the regular season, then travel to Demopolis for the first round of the 5A state playoffs on Nov. 7.

Eli Thames added 73 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and Thomas Payton had 73 yards and a touchdown on four receptions from Davis.

Davis threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Payton to break a scoreless tie, but Jeremiah Crawford countered with a 8-yard touchdown run to make it 7-7. Thames scored on a 7-yard run for the Panthers, but CJ Franklin answered with a 2-yard run to make it 14-14.

Davis scored on a 24-yard run late in the first half to give Elmore County a 21-14 halftime lead, then threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to Kashon Moe, 8 yards to Beau Taylor and 4 yards to Justin Brook to turn the game into a rout.
