FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP (Week 5): Prattville overpowers Hewitt; Rehobeth gets first win; MA shuts out St. James

Prattville 63, Hewitt-Trussville 30

TRUSSVILLE -- Marterrius Sankey and Jason Crenshaw each ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead Prattville to a 63-30 win over the Huskies on Friday night.

The 5-0 start by the Lions is the best since a 15-0 season under Bill Clark in 2007 that ended with a 6A state championship in Legion Field against Spain Park.

Sankey rushed for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries and Crenshaw ran for 52 yards and two touchdowns on three carries as the Lions piled up 618 total yards and nine touchdowns. Jaiden Crenshaw added 29 yards and a touchdown on six carries and CJ Brown had 44 yards on eight carries.

Will McKay completed 15 of 21 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Christian Alexander had six of those receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Kolby King had five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Brown had two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown and Deshawn Hall had two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Datavius Caldwell had four tackles, an assist and an interception return for 33 yards. King added three tackles, three assists and an interception and Elijah Brown had three tackles, a tackle for loss, an assist and a sack.

Prattville improved to 3-0 in 6A Region 3 play and will take a week off before resuming region play with a game against Spain Park in Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Oct. 2.

Rehobeth 14, Park Crossing 8

The Rehobeth Rebels threw one pass in the game and it turned out to be the difference in a 14-8 victory over Park Crossing in a battle at Cramton Bowl on Friday.

William Craig hit Kevin Lamar on a 56-yard pass play with 50 seconds left in the game to earn Reohobeth’s first win of the season. The pass broke an 8-8 tie.

Park Crossing had tied the game with just over six minutes remaining on a 1-yard run by Jaylen Sankey, who also added the tying 2-point conversion.

The Rebels took an early lead in the game on Kaden Poe’s 1-yard run on the first possession of the game.

Park Crossing suffered four turnovers in the game including two pass interceptions in the end zone that ended drives.

Coly Joyner led the Rebels with 121 yards on 27 carries as part of a team-total of 200 yards rushing night.

Zion Stinson was one of three quarterbacks to play for the Thunderbirds due to injuries and passed for 136 yards on 13 of 20 attempts with three interceptions.

Park Crossing fell to 2-3 and 0-3 in Class 5A Region 2 action while Rehobeth improved to 1-4, 1-2.

The Thunderbirds have an off week before facing Percy Julian on Oct. 2. Rehobeth is also off next week before facing Stanhope Elmore.

Montgomery Academy 58, St. James 0

Reid McBride completed seven passes with five of those going to Jarrett Friendly with two for scores to lead the Eagles to a rout of St. James on Friday.

McBride was 7 for 10 passing for 176 yards three touchdowns. Friendly finished with 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Ali Nelson carried six times for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Braden Gordon had 61 yards and a score on five carries while Jay Samples carried four times for 70 yards.

Defensively William Marks had three tackles for loss and an interception; Will Kitchens had five tackles; Ridgeway Britt finished with seven tackles; Hays Marks had three tackles including two for a loss and Friendly added an interception returned for a touchdown.

MA (4-0, 2-0 Private A Region 2) will play JAG next Friday at Cramton Bowl. St. James (2-3, 2-1) travels to Mississippi to face Lamar Academy.

Alabama Christian 31, Prattville Christian 14

The Eagles continued its mastery over rival PCA with a convincing win at John Mark Stallings Field at Faulkner University on Friday.

Michael Merritt rushed for 211 yards on 23 carries and scored twice to lead ACA to its first Private Class A Region 2 win of the season. Mason Henry was 10-of-15 passing for 106 yards while Ethan Dabney and Bryson Dabney led the receivers with a combined seven catches for 77 yards and a score.

Mekhi Gardner led ACA’s defense with seven tackles while Cooper Milner and Keenan McCarthy each had four tackles.

ACA (2-3, 1-2) travels to Sweet Water next week while PCA (3-2, 1-2) goes to Thorsby.

Hooper Academy 56, Crenshaw Christian Academy 0

HOPE HULL -- Ayden Newman scored on both of his carries, accounting for 133 yards to help the Colts to a 56-0 win over Crenshaw Christian on Friday night at Davis-Henry Field.

The win helped the Colts (3-2) even their Region 1 record at 2-2 with five games remaining in the 10-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the state playoffs.

Kingston White added 61 yards and a touchdown on two carries, while quarterback Hunter Bowman threw touchdown passes of 24 and 28 yards. Cohen Forster added a 79-yard touchdown pass.

Jeremy Griggs totaled 131 yards and three touchdowns on his three receptions. Heyden Chun was a perfect 8 of 8 on extra-point attempts.

Defensively, Jaylen Lamons had five tackles for the Colts, along with a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Hooper will travel to Prattville to play Autauga Academy next Friday, while Crenshaw Christian (0-5) will travel to Southern Prep next Friday.

Cornerstone Christian 68, Macon East Academy 18

CECIL -- Matthew Simpson rushed 14 times for 125 yards and all three of Macon East Academy’s touchdowns as the Knights were held to their lowest offensive output as an 8-man squad in a 68-18 loss to Cornerstone Christian on Friday night.

The loss was the first for the defending Class A state champions, snapping a 17-game winning streak. Macon East Academy’s last loss was in the 2024 Class A finals to Cornerstone and its last regular-season loss was the final game of the 2024 regular season to Cornerstone.

The last time Macon East scored 18 or fewer points was the final game of the 2023 season in the Class AA playoffs to end a 1-10 season.

Quarterback Brandon Fitch added eight rushes for 30 yards for the Knights and completed 2 of 10 passes for 37 yards with an interception.

Defensively, Colton McWhorter and J.D. Spires had six tackles each for Macon East, followed by Trent Shuford with five tackles and Fitch with four.

Macon East (4-1) will travel to Lanett to play Springwood School next Friday, while Cornerstone (4-0) is idle next week before playing host to Escambia Academy on Oct. 2.

Greenville 11, Tallassee 8

TALLASSEE -- Tyler Nimmer kicked a 31-yard field goal to break an 8-8 tie in the fourth quarter and left the Greenville Tigers to an 11-8 win over Tallassee to spoil the Tigers’ homecoming at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium on Friday night.

Tallassee managed just six first downs and 38 rushing yards in the loss, but tied the game in the second quarter on a 3-yard Hamp Love touchdown run and a Trent Morris conversion pass to Hudson Timmerman.

Grenville had taken the lead on James Reynolds’ 89-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Morris minutes earlier, followed by a Morris conversion run for an 8-0 lead.

Love led Tallassee with 37 rushing yards on 17 carries. Morris, who had one yard on nine carries, completed 5 of 12 passes for 38 yards.

Tallassee (0-5) dropped to 0-3 in 4A Region 4 play and will remain home to face Booker T. Washington next Friday.
