BIRMINGHAM — Park Crossing junior Tyler Stangline found herself in a similar situation as last season.

Two free throws would win the game for the Thunderbirds. The only difference was - this was in the semfinals and not the championship.

Similar situation, same result.

Stangline calmly sank two free throws with less than a second remaining to give Park Crossing a 48-46 victory over Fort Payne in the Class 6A girls semifinal at the BJCC Legacy Arena on Wednesday, putting the T’Birds back in the state finals for a second straight year.

“She has ice in her veins,” stated Park Crossing coach Freeah Smith. “I know Tyler. I was celebrating before it went in.”

The game was tied with less than five seconds remaining when the Thunderbirds had the ball with a chance to win. A missed shot by Tariah McGee landed in the hands of Stangline, who was fouled just before the horn ended the fourth quarter.

Last year, she sank free throws with three seconds left to beat Hazel Green in overtime to win the state title.

“I just had to trust my training and just lock in,” Stangline said.

Mallyah Meeks had 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead Park Crossing (31-3). Trinity Adams added 10 points while Stangline had six points and four rebounds, including the biggest one of the game.

“Coach let me know that I am a shooter and to make sure that the other team doesn't get in my head,” Stangline said. “My team also encouraged me and supported me from the sideline.”

The Thunderbirds will face Hazel Green for a second straight season in the 6A finals. Tipoff is set for Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Hazel Green knocked off Chelsea, 59-32, to advance.
