SPORTS UPDATE: Trinity's Dorsch advances to state golf tourney; Lakeside sweeps Patrician for AISA Class A title; Bama falls in SEC Tourney

Trinity’s Brycen Dorsch shot a 75 on Monday in the Class 4A South sub-state tournament at The Pines of Chatom to advance to the state golf tournament next week in Birmingham.

The top two teams at each sub-state tournament, along with the top two individuals not on advancing teams, qualify for the state tournament May 12-13 at Oxmoor Valley.

Jackson won the Class 4A South sub-state with a 309 and Fayette County also qualified with a 315. Opp missed the cut by one stroke, finishing with a 316, followed by American Christian Academy (318), Trinity (320), Houston Academy (326), Northside Methodist (333) and Indian Springs (425).

American Christian’s Andrew Turner was the low medalist with a 73, followed by Dorsch. Both golfers qualified for the state tournament.

At the Montgomery Country Club, Lee-Scott Academy (300) and St. James (321) qualified for the state tournament after finishing one-two in the Class 1A-3A South sub-state on Tuesday, but Montgomery Academy finished one stroke behind the Trojans at 322 and missed the cut.

Among the Montgomery Academy golfers, Jackson McIntyre led the way with a 76, followed by Thomas Floyd (81) and Connor Evans (81), Barnes Trott (84), Joe Drumwright (86) and Jackson Williams (86).

Lakeside sweeps Patrician to win AISA Class A title; Clarke Prep, Southern to play deciding Game 3 today

Carson Scott hit a walk-off homer to lift Lakeside to a 5-4 win over Patrician to complete the sweep of the AISA Class A state championship series at Paterson Field on Wednesday.

Scott’s home run came with the game tied at 4-4. It was his second RBI of the game.

The Chiefs won the first game of the series, 9-0. Demetrius Hardnett pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out 14.

In the Class AA championship series, Clarke Prep earned a 3-0 win over Southern Academy in the first game with Tanner Bayles pitching a four-hit shut out. Gray Wilson had a two-run single in the fifth inning.

In Game 2, Southern shut out the Gators, 9-0 with Wyatt Martin knocking in three runs and Braeden Agee picking up the win on the mound.

Clarke Prep (28-6) and Southern (24-11) will play the deciding Game 3 today at 11 a.m. at Paterson Field.

Crimson Tide ousted in SEC softball tourney

ATHENS, Ga. – Alabama softball fell to South Carolina, 6-2, Wednesday night in the second round of the 2025 SEC Softball Tournament at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga.

Alabama (37-21) got off to a hot start against South Carolina (40-14) as Audrey Vandagriff led off the game with a solo home run. Lauren Johnson scored later in the inning on an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Tide a two-run lead in the opening frame. The Gamecocks threatened immediately in the bottom half, loading the bases with one out and plated a run on an fielder’s choice.

South Carolina’s Ella Chancey tied the game with a one-out RBI double in the fourth and SC took the lead with a two-run home run from Arianna Rodi in the bottom of the fifth. Rodi smacked her second home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth, another two-run shot to make it 6-2. Mari Hubbard led off the top of the seventh with a double to center, but the Gamecocks retired the next three to end the game.

“It was just not a good game for us. The pitches we threw that they hit were not good pitches,” stated Bama coach Patrick Murphy. “We missed our spots a lot unfortunately and they took advantage. They did a great job capitalizing on the mistakes. We didn’t capitalize enough in the first inning when we had our opportunity.”

Alabama will await the announcement of the NCAA Regional tournament sites and selections on Sunday.
