Brycen Dorsch didn’t pick up a golf club in earnest until five years ago, so the Trinity senior never considered a future that included an opportunity to play golf at the collegiate level.

“It is truly special,” he said. “At first, I thought I would be a little nervous about today with everything going on, but I’m truly ecstatic just thinking about my future at Shelton.”

Dorsch will continue his career at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, picking the Bucs over other offers and holding a signing ceremony on Wednesday in the Trinity gym in front of friends, teammates and classmates.

“I really liked the college atmosphere around it,” he said of his college choice. “I like (the University of) Alabama. Most of my friends are going to ‘Bama, so that was an added bonus. I was between Shelton State and another school and the other school was the same size as Shelton State but it was kind of in the middle of nowhere. I decided to go with the one closer to Alabama because I’ll be closer to my friends.”

Dorsch spent much of his life in Austin, Texas and never really thought much about playing golf, even at the urging of his father.

“We actually used to live on a golf course and every once in a while he’d try to get me out there,” Dorsch recalled. “I used to play baseball. After that, Covid hit and we lived on a golf course and I was basically doing nothing, so I got on the links and haven’t dropped it since.”

The Dorsch family moved to Montgomery prior to the start of the 2024-25 school year. Last spring, Dorsch placed third in the Alabama High School Athletic Association 4A state golf tournament.

“This is his second year here,” Trinity golf coach Tim Bethea said. “He’s got a great personality. He’s very gifted but humble at the same time. My kids on the varsity team mixed really well (with Dorsch) from the beginning. He’s got a lot of God-given talent but he works really hard on his game. I’ve only known him for 18 months but I feel like I’ve known him a long, long time.”

After competing for the Wildcats in 2026, Dorsch will enroll at Shelton State in the fall and hopes he has the opportunity to sign with a four-year program in 2028.

“That was kind of my plan,” he said. “Give golf a try and if golf doesn’t work out, I can always transfer to ‘Bama. If it does work out, it could take me possibly to ‘Bama or other places around the United States.”
