PREP HOOPS: Hooper sweeps North River; MA boys falter in Huntsville Classic

Hooper Academy 81, North River Christian 59

HOPE HULL -- The Colts outscored North River 24-1 in the second quarter to build a halftime lead and cruise to an 81-59 win over North River at Darrell Self Gym on Monday.

Kingston White scored nine points in each of the first two quarters and finished with a game-high 25 points. Jeremy Griggs added 15 points, including nine in the second quarter.

Bradee Colvett added 12 points, followed by Tray Davenport with seven and Ayden Newman with six.

Austin Harmon led North River with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. Kaysen Dennison added 14 points, including 12 in the second half.

Hooper (12-3) travels to Trinity Christian on Friday for the area opener.

 

Oxford 61, Montgomery Academy 43

HUNTSVILLE -- Mason Ellis had 21 points, five rebounds and three assists, but it wasn’t enough to save a cold-shooting Montgomery Academy squad in a 61-43 loss to 7A Oxford in the opening round of the Huntsville City Classic on Friday.

Braden Gordon added nine points and grabbed six rebounds, followed by Caleb Myles and JayJay Jackson with four points each and Jarrett Friendly with two points and 10 rebounds. Paxton Haigler added three points.

Montgomery Academy (8-4) plays Whitesburg Christian on Saturday.

 

GIRLS

Hooper Academy 39, North River Christian 35

HOPE HULL -- Katie Robinson rallied the Colts with back-to-back 3-pointers in a 9-0 run early in the second quarter to help Hooper defeat North River 39-35 on Monday.

Hooper trailed 12-3 at the end of the first quarter when Robinson rallied the Colts with a pair of baskets that helped Hooper tie the game at 12-12.

Robinson finished with 13 points, followed by Henlee Garvin with 10.

Hooper (8-6) opens area play on Friday at Trinity Christian. 

West Point 59, Montgomery Academy 28

ATHENS  -- The Lady Eagles fell to the third-ranked team in Class 5A, West Point, in the opening round of the Border Wars Tournament 59-28 on Monday.

Montgomery Academy fell behind early, trailing 16-3 at the end of the first quarter, but cut into the lead, trailing just 20-11 before West Point hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Eagles continued to play West Point evenly in the third quarter, getting outscored 19-15, before running out of gas in the final period.  

Kaci Armistead, seeing her first action since suffering a concussion in the Dec. 6 game with Huntsville, led the Eagles, followed by Bailey Davis with seven points and E.G. Hines with six.

Montgomery Academy (4-7) resumes play in the tournament on Tuesday against Southside-Gadsden at 10:30 a.m.
