PREP UPDATE: Catholic boys slip past Tallassee; Trinity girls dump LAMP; PCA wrestling win on Senior Night

BOYS BASKETBALL

Catholic 49, Tallassee 46

TALLASSEE -- MJ Belser scored 20 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and went 8 of 10 at the free-throw line to lead the Knights to their sixth consecutive win in a 49-46 area victory in the Tallassee gym on Tuesday night.

Myles Gourdine added 11 points, four assists and four steals, while Matt Gourdine had eight points and seven assists in the win. Devin Hampton added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Catholic’s win kept the Knights atop the 4A Area 5 standings at 5-1, a half game ahead of Booker T. Washington at 4-1. Tallassee is in third at 2-2, followed by Trinity at 2-3 and LAMP at 0-6.

Catholic (11-9) returns home to play host to LAMP in an area game on Friday before traveling to Montgomery Academy on Tuesday.

 

Thorsby 65, Alabama Christian 55

THORSBY -- Max Burnett scored 29 points to lead the Rebels to a 65-55 win over the Eagles on Tuesday in the Thorsby gym.

The Eagles had pulled within 44-43 entering the fourth quarter, but the Rebels hit 8 of 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.

Christian Snipes led ACA with 20 points and four rebounds, followed by Mason Henry with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds, including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter in an attempt to rally. Knox Russell added eight points.

Montgomery Academy leads 3A Area 5 with a 6-0 record, followed by Dallas County (4-2), Thorsby (3-2), St. James (2-4) and Alabama Christian (0-7).

Alabama Christian (6-14) will play host to St. James on Friday.

Evangel Christian Academy 48, Fort Dale Academy 41

D’John Wright scored 15 points and Nathaniel Doss added 13 points to lead the Lions to a Class AA Region 1 Area 2 win over Fort Dale in the Evangel gym on Tuesday night.

London Belcher chipped in six points and Tyler Surles had six points for Evangel, which improved to 3-1 in area play.

The Lions (8-9) travel to Lowndesboro to play Lowndes Academy in an area game on Thursday.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Trinity 88, LAMP 24

Lizzie Causey hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 28 points to lead the Wildcats to an 88-24 win over LAMP in a 4A Area 5 game on Tuesday.

Emory Casey followed with 21 points and seven assists and Ellie Causey added 11 points as the Causey sisters combined for 16 3-pointers.

Lilly Smith added 12 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and five steals.  

Trinity’s win allowed the Wildcats (4-1 in area play) to keep pace with Catholic (6-0), which defeated Tallassee on Tuesday. Booker T. Washington is third in the 4A Area 5 standings at 2-3, followed by Tallassee at 1-3 and LAMP at 0-6.

Trinity (14-6) will return to action on Thursday at Montgomery Academy in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game.   

 

Thorsby 81, Alabama Christian 59

THORSBY -- Brooklyn Reeser scored 41 points to lead the Rebels to an 81-59 win over the Eagles on Tuesday night in the Thorsby gym.

Reeser scored 15 points in the first quarter, helping Thorsby jump out to a 25-6 lead from which the Eagles never recovered.

Adalyn Newkirk led Alabama Christian with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists, followed by Sam Burgess with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals and Nora Burgess with eight points and seven steals.

St. James leads the 3A Area 5 race at 6-0, followed by Montgomery Academy (4-2), Thorsby (3-2), Dallas County (1-5) and Alabama Christian (1-6).

ACA (7-11) will play host to St. James on Friday.

St. James 80, Montgomery Academy 14

Morgan Lilly scored 19 points recording her 1,000 career point becoming 15th Lady Trojan in score history to reach this milestone in the win over Montgomery Academy on Tuesday. She added four rebounds, six assists, and six steals. 

Natalie Barton recorded a triple double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. Jordyn McRae had 14 points and six rebounds while Kaitlin Mitchell added 13 points and four rebounds. Kaden Fair also reached double figures with 12 points.

STJ improved to 21-4 with the win and will face Alabama Christian on Friday.

 

River Ridge (Ga.) 62, St. James 58

WOODSTOCK -- St. James fought back from an eight-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to take a brief lead with seven seconds left, only to have the defending state champions score on the other end of the court to take a 62-58 victory on Monday.

Natalie Barton had 18 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and a steal to help the Trojans fight back from a five-point halftime deficit. Morgan Lilly added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals, Kaitlin Mitchell had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals and Jordyn McRae had nine points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

 

WRESTLING

Prattville Christian sweeps quad match on Senior Night

PRATTVILLE -- Prattville Christian’s wrestling team celebrated Senior Night on Tuesday by defeating St. James, Calera and Houston Academy in a quad match.

The Panthers recognized the careers of seniors Carter Copeland, Brysen Pugh, Logan Wesch and Cole Young in a pre-game ceremony.  

In the first dual of the night PCA took on the Calera Eagles and came away with a 54-24 win. The Panthers duplicated the score in the next match, defeating Houston Academy 54-24.  In the last match of the night PCA faced St. James and defeated the Trojans 48-30.

Prattville Christian wrestlers who went undefeated on Tuesday include Ryan Lueck, Jens Johnson, Brysen Pugh, Carter Copeland, Cole Young, Logan Wesch, Bryson Bowman and Orion Garrett.

The PCA wrestling team returns to the mat on Thursday as they travel to Catholic to take on the Knights, G.W. Carver and Beulah in a quad match.
