Green named Macon East baseball coach

CECIL -- Jerry Greene returned to Macon East Academy as an assistant coach in 2025-26 with no illusion of spending another day as a head coach.

But when baseball coach Christian Coston abruptly left earlier this month to take the head coaching position at Montevallo High, Greene was the logical choice to step in on short notice and coach the Knights in 2027.

“We had a couple of people that applied that would have been really good,” Macon East headmaster Glynn Lott said. “We called a couple of people to see if they were interested, but they mainly weren’t because of the timing. That was the main reason for people that we reached out to.

“But from the get-go, Jerry came and said ‘I know the kids, I know what we have’ and was willing to do it. I coached (the baseball program) the first couple of years, but Jerry was the first real baseball coach we had. You’re not going to find anybody who’s got better credentials.

“Our group’s going to be young, they’re going to need fundamentals and I think that’s what he does best.”

Greene, 66, will begin his 47th year at the school where he previously served as a baseball coach from 1998-2009.

“The (coaching) change happened so late,” Greene said. “I’ve been coaching for 46 years, this is my 47th, but as long as I feel good every morning, I like being a part of it. I really enjoyed working with the kids the last couple of years.
