SPRING PREPS: Catholic baseball tops St. James; Pike Road softball trims Brew Tech

BASEBALL

Catholic 4, St. James 1

Ethan Levanda scattered five hits over six innings while striking out 12, walking none and allowing just one run in the Knights’ 4-1 win at St. James on Tuesday.

Catholic picked up a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Levanda, but the Trojans answered with a solo home run by Jimmy Dickens in the fourth inning.

Will Blackwell pitched the final inning for Catholic, retiring the side in order.

Charlie Cutler started for the Trojans, allowing five hits and four runs over 6.1 innings, striking out two and walking five. Luke Catchings pitched the final two-thirds of an inning.

Will Vucovich, Levanda, Christian Alvarez and Blackwell each drove in a run for the Knights.

Dickens went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Trojans.

 

SOFTBALL

Pike Road 9, Brew Tech 8

PIKE ROAD -- The Patriots pounded out 13 hits to take an early lead, then held off Brew Tech late for a 9-8 victory on Tuesday.

Pike Road grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single by Addison Belyeu and a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Thompson. After briefly losing the lead in the second inning, Pike Road responded in the third when Paisley Forshey singled in a run, Lily Kate Vinson tripled to bring in another and Haleigh Morris grounded out to score a third run.

Offensively, the Patriots were led by Thompson, who went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single. Kasyn Wilson also contributed three hits, while Belyeu, Vinson, and Forshey each added two hits. Morris contributed with a key RBI as well.

In the circle, Abby Olesen pitched a complete game to earn her sixth win, recording five strikeouts and walking one.

Kaymarria Bandy went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead Brew Tech. Jaila Griffin was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Kyra Wallace took the loss in the circle.

Pike Road travels to Rehobeth on Thursday for an area game.

 

Alabama Christian 2, Montgomery Academy 1

A gritty performance by Maddie Owens earned a 2-1 win by Alabama Christian in a 2-1 area victory over Montgomery Academy on Tuesday.

Owens surrendered 11 hits but allowed just one run in a complete-game performance while striking out five and walking one.

Davis Anne Fitzpatrick took the loss in five innings of work, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walking two.

Fitzpatrick, Layla Stovall, Elinor Grace Hines and Emily Kathryn Casey each collected two hits for Montgomery Academy.

Campbell Hammett went 1 for 4, but her RBI double gave ACA its first run in the third inning. Laura Matthews went 3 for 4 to lead ACA, while Owens went 2 for 3.

Montgomery Academy remains home to play St. James in a 3A Area 5 game on Wednesday.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Opelika 0

OPELIKA -- The Eagles returned from spring break with a 9-0 win over Opelika in a 7A Section 3 match on Tuesday that helped Montgomery Academy remain unbeaten in section play at 5-0.

Singles winners included Loal Campbell at No. 1, Alyssa Kaplan at No. 2, Mary Surhea White at No. 3, Charlotte Vann at No. 4, Lillian Cameron at No. 5 and Sailor Vance at No. 6.

Doubles winners included Campbell-Kaplan at No. 1, White-Bailey Davis at No. 2 and Cameron-Vance at No. 3.

Montgomery Academy (9-6) returns home to play St. Paul’s Episcopal at McLemore Tennis Center on Friday.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Charles Henderson 2, Prattville Christian 0

TROY -- Prattville Christian dropped its fourth game of the season in a shutout loss to Charles Henderson on Tuesday.

PCA (1-4-3) returns home to host Alabama Christian Academy on Friday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Charles Henderson 9, Prattville Christian 1

TROY -- Nolan Currier scored the Panthers’ lone goal in a 9-1 loss to Charles Henderson on Tuesday.

PCA (1-7) returns home to play host to Alabama Christian Academy on Friday.  

In the junior varsity game, Charles Henderson defeated Prattville Christian 5-0. The Panthers (3-4-1) will travel to Holtville on Tuesday.
