WEEKEND PREPS: Catholic flag sweeps two games; MA volleyball wins three matches but win streak ends

FLAG FOOTBALL

Catholic 33, G.W. Carver (Ga.) 6

PHENIX CITY -- Hayden Fitts and Avery Sadler combined to throw three touchdown passes as the Knights rolled to an easy win over Carver in the Border Wars Tournament on Saturday.

Fitts completed 15 of 23 passes for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Sadler completed her only attempt for a 1-yard touchdown pass as the Knights won their fifth consecutive game. Charley Frank went 2 of 7 for 17 yards as well.

Fitts added 76 rushing yards on eight carries.

Sadler caught five passes for 58 yards, Haley Ishman had 58 yards and a touchdown on a pair of receptions, Aubrey Sadler caught three passes for 23 yards, Maggie McNeely had five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown and Molly Dwyer added a 15-yard touchdown catch as Catholic built a 20-6 halftime lead and led 27-6 after three quarters.

Defensively, Fitts led the way with eight stops, followed by Ireyda Perez-Mendez with five, Addi Little with four, Frances Ann Rogers with three and Avery Sadler with three. Ishman had a pair of interceptions and 19 yards in returns. Rogers added an interception.

Catholic (5-1) returned to action later in the tournament against Escambia County (Fla.).

Catholic 35, Escambia County 12

PHENIX CITY -- Catholic used a 22-point second quarter to defeat Escambia County 35-12 in the Border Wars Tournament on Saturday.

Hayden Fitts completed 13 of 26 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

Aria Martinez also threw a touchdown pass for the Knights.

Haley Ishman caught four passes for 39 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Martinez had three catches for 52 yards and a touchdown and Frances Ann Rogers had four receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Maggie McNeely had five flag pulls, followed by Avery Sadler with four and Ireyda Perez-Mendez with three.

Catholic defenders had five interceptions in the game. Sadler intercepted two passes, while Addi Little, Destini Hartman and McNeely all had one interception.

Catholic (6-1) will travel to Tallassee on Monday before playing its first Region 2 game on Tuesday at Northside Methodist Academy.

VOLLEYBALL

Montgomery Academy 2, John Carroll 0

BIRMINGHAM -- Montgomery Academy swept John Carroll 2-0 in the opening round of the Barry Walker Invitational on Saturday, winning 25-19 and 25-15.

Morgan Springer had eight kills, a block and three aces, while Rehmat Sidhu had two aces, seven digs and 18 assists to lead the Eagles.  

Addison Kitchens had four kills and a dig, Caroline Wood had three kills, Bennett Britt had three kills, two blocks, an ace and four digs, E.G. Hines had two kills, an ace and seven digs, Emilyn Trott had two kills, Lizzie Campbell had nine digs and an ace and Kathleen Johnston had five digs and two aces.

Montgomery Academy 2, Madison Academy 0

BIRMINGHAM -- Montgomery Academy swept Madison Academy 25-13 and 25-21 in the Barry Walker Invitational on Saturday at Briarwood Christian.

Bennett Britt had seven kills, two blocks, an ace and 10 digs, Morgan Springer had five kills, a block, two aces and three digs and Caroline Wood had five kills, a block and six digs for the Eagles. E.G. Hines had four kills, two aces and seven digs, Addison Kitchens had a kill and a block, Rehmat Sidhu had a kill, nine digs and 21 assists, Caroline Sullivan had a kill, Kathleen Johnston had an ace and eight digs and Lizzie Campbell had 12 digs.

Montgomery Academy 2, Mobile Christian 0

BIRMINGHAM -- Montgomery Academy swept Mobile Christian 2-0 in the Barry Walker Invitational on Saturday, winning 25-18 and 25-21.

Bennett Britt had 12 kills, a block and 10 digs, Morgan Springer had six kills, an ace and six digs, Caroline Wood had six kills, a block and six digs and E.G. Hines had six kills and nine digs for the Eagles.

Rehmat Sidhu had 15 digs and 29 assists, Addison Kitchens had two kills and a dig, Lizzie Campbell had three aces, 14 digs and an assist, Ella Gaines Thomas had two aces and  Kathleen Johnston had six digs.

Montgomery Academy 2, John Paul II 0

BIRMINGHAM -- Montgomery Academy rallied for a 28-26 win in the first set against John Paul II, then won 25-19 to complete the sweep in the Barry Walker Invitational on Saturday.

Bennett Britt had 16 kills and 15 digs, Morgan Springer had seven kills and two digs, E.G. Hines had six kills and 15 digs and Rehmat Sidhu had 15 digs and 28 assists to lead the Eagles. Addison Kitchens had a kill, a block and a dig, Lizzie Campbell had an ace, 13 digs and an assist, Kathleen Johnston had 13 digs and Caroline Wood had a pair of blocks.

Briarwood Christian 2, Montgomery Academy 0

BIRMINGHAM -- Briarwood Christian snapped Montgomery Academy’s 14-game winning streak in the Barry Walker Invitational on Saturday, defeating the Eagles 25-14 and 25-13 in the Briarwood Christian gym.

Bennett Britt had eight kills and eight digs and E.G. Hines had five kills and eight digs in the loss. Morgan Springer had two kills and five digs, Rehmat Sidhu had three digs and 14 assists, Caroline Wood had two kills, Lizzie Campbell had four digs, Kathleen Johnston had two digs and Addison Kitchens had a dig.

Montgomery Academy (22-5) will travel to Prattville Christian Academy on Tuesday for a Class A Private Area 4 match that starts at 6 p.m.

MA boys, girls finish in second place at Kudzu Hills Invitational

BREMEN -- The Montgomery Academy cross country team finished in second place in both the boys’ and girls’ division at the annual Kudzu Hills Invitational at Cold Springs High School.

Scoring for the boys team were Clive Oborn, who finished seventh overall; Stephen McLemore, who finished eighth overall; Colin Whitley; Doc McIntyre; Connor Crook; Will McKay; and Ruston Wood.

Scoring for the girls team were Livia Dwyer, who finished second overall; Vivian Oborn, who finished third overall; Lucy Hubbard, who finished sixth overall; Charlotte Vann; Bea Farley; Lillian Cameron; and Anne Emery Smith.
