PREP HOOPS: Trinity girls stop Lee-Scott; Catholic boys take key area game; Macon East topples Lakeside

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Trinity 68, Lee-Scott Academy 50

Ellie Causey and Lilly Smith combined for 48 points as the Wildcats defeated Lee-Scott Academy 68-50 at Captain Jack Court on Tuesday night.

Causey had 24 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Smith had 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists.  

Trinity (12-6) will return to 4A Area 5 play on Friday with a game at Tallassee.  

 

Montgomery Academy 58, Thorsby 31

Junior E.G. Hines scored a season high 20 points, along with eight steals, four rebounds and three assists, to lead the Eagles to a 58-31 win over Thorsby in a 3A Area 5 game at Joe Mooty Court on Tuesday.

Montgomery Academy struggled for consistency from its perimeter shooters, relying on its defense with 27 steals that set the tone early.

Garland Thomas added 19 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal, followed by Bailey Davis with 13 points, six steals, five rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot. Kaci Armistead added six steals, four rebounds and three assists, part of a 16-assist night by the Eagles.

Montgomery Academy improved to 3-1 in area play behind St. James (3-0) and ahead of Thorsby (2-1), Dallas County (1-3) and Alabama Christian (0-4).  

Montgomery Academy (7-10) travels to 7A G.W. Carver on Thursday, then returns home on Friday to play Alabama Christian.

 

Hooper Academy 47, Crenshaw Christian 18

LUVERNE -- Jade Taylor scored 17 points, including eight in the first quarter, as the Colts jumped out to an early lead and extended it with a 15-0 run in the second quarter on the way to a 47-18 victory in the CCA gym on Tuesday.

Jenna Conway and Kinsley White each added nine points for the Colts.

Libby Thompkins led Crenshaw Christian with five points.

Hooper (11-6) will play host to Trinity Christian on Friday.

 

Lakeside School 39, Macon East Academy 34

CECIL -- Jamya Powell had 11 points and 20 rebounds, scoring her 1,000th career point in a 39-34 loss to the Chiefs on Tuesday night in a Class A Region 1 Area 1 game.

Addie Longcrier added 12 points and four steals for the Knights, while Mollie Ross finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Macon East will play host to Crenshaw Christian next Tuesday.

Catholic 73, Booker T. Washington 44

TUSKEGEE -- Hannah Smith recorded another double double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, along with six assists and five steals, to keep the Knights unbeaten in 4A Area 5 play with a 73-44 win over Booker T. Washington in the BTW gym on Tuesday.

Jordan Robinson added 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals and Ajah Tuggle had 16 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Catholic remains atop the area standings at 4-0. The Knights (12-5) will travel to LAMP for an area game on Friday.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Catholic 57, Booker T. Washington 54

TUSKEGEE -- Matt Gourdine had 14 points, four assists, five rebounds and three steals to lead the Knights to a huge 4A Area 5 victory over the Golden Eagles in the BTW gym on Tuesday night.

Gourdine  was clutch at the free-throw line as well, hitting 6 of 7 attempts while the rest of the team was 8 of 22 from the line.

Devin Hampton had 11 points and 13 rebounds, while MJ Belser had 10 points, 11 rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals. Dezmont Simpson had eight points and three assists and Mylez Gourdine had eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Knights improved to 3-1 in Area 5 play, still trailing BTW (4-1), but ahead of Tallassee (1-1), Trinity (1-2) and LAMP (0-4).

Catholic (8-9) will travel to LAMP for an area game on Friday.

 

Montgomery Academy 85, Thorsby 52

Montgomery Academy scored at least 20 points in every quarter while holding Thorsby to six in the first quarter in an 85-52 area win over Thorsby at Joe Mooty Court on Tuesday.

Mason Ellis led Montgomery Academy with 28 points, eight assists, five steals and five rebounds, while sophomore Caleb Myles added a career high 18 points -- 13 in the second half -- while grabbing six rebounds and coming up with three steals.

Jarrett Friendly added 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had five assists and four steals. JayJay Jackson chipped in 14 points, along with four assists, five steals and three rebounds.

The win kept the Eagles atop the 3A Area 5 standings at 4-0, followed by Thorsby at 2-1, Dallas County at 2-2, St. James at 1-3 and Alabama Christian at 0-4.

Montgomery Academy (13-5) will travel to G.W. Carver on Thursday night before returning home on Friday to play Alabama Christian.  

 

Macon East Academy 78, Lakeside School 39

CECIL -- Jermaine Pena had a career-high 27 points and Sam Wallace added 24 as the Knights defeated Lakeside 78-39 in a Class A Region 1 Area 1 game in the Macon East gym on Tuesday night.

Wallace added six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. Jackson Todd had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Macon East (13-3) improved to 2-1 in area play and will travel to Abbeville Christian for another area game on Jan. 22.
